Glossary

It seemed worthwhile to have a page dedicated to acronyms and terms commonly used in this process.

TTC – Try to Conceive

2WW – 2 week wait, or the time between ovulation and when you can take a pregnancy test

IVF – Invitro Fertilization

ICSI – Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, an IVF procedure where a sperm is injected directly into an egg.  Usually used when there are problems with the sperm.

ER – Egg Retrieval , an IVF procedure where they remove eggs from follicles

ET – Embryo Transfer, an IVF procedure where they transfer embryos into the uterus

IUI – Intrauterine Insemination

BFN – Big Fat Negative, or a negative pregnancy test

BFP – Big Fat Positive, or a positive pregnancy test

POAS – Pee on a Stick, usually a pregnancy test but could also be an OPK

OPK – Ovulation Predictor Kit, detects surge in Lh hormone which precedes ovulation

PUPO – Pregnant Until Proven Otherwise

DH – Dear Husband

DW – Dear Wife

AF – “Aunt Flo” (your period)

RE – Reproductive Endocrinologist, or a doctor specializing in the reproductive system

EWCM – Egg White Cervical Mucous, vaginal fluid that indicates time of increased fertility

hcG – human chorionic gonadotropin, the hormone produced during pregnancy which is detected by the pregnancy test.  Can also be used to induce ovulation (trigger)

Stimming – taking ovarian stimulating drugs

Trigger – an injection which triggers ovulation, usually hcG

dildocam – my own affectionate term for the transvaginal ultrasound device

Follies – short for follicles

Embabies – embryos grown in the lab during an IVF

Swimmers – sperm

4dp5dt – 4 days past a 5 day embryo transfer (also day 9 of your cycle or 9dpo)

DE – Donor Eggs

OE – Own Eggs
